Thousand turn out to say "No to Intervention!" About a thousand people gathered Sunday for a march and rally which was the culmination of several days of events sponsored by the Latin American Solidarity Coalition (LASC). The events were billed as a "Mobilization Against Military and Economic Intervention in Latin America and across the Globe" and scheduled to coincide with the IMF and World Bank spring meetings which were held here over the weekend. After a rally at Malcolm X Park, featuring music and speakers, the march started on a "tour of shame" through the city, stopping to protest at corporate and government agencies, including Taco Bell and the Inter-American Development Bank. Following a second rally at Farragut Square, the march ended in front of the IMF and World Bank headquarters (Photos from march). Despite a heavy police presence throughout the march and rally, there were no reported incidents of police brutality, and no arrests. A brief standoff between protesters and police near the end of the march ended peacefully. The streets around the IMF and World Bank were barricaded and heavily guarded, while Lafayette Park was surrounded by double-walled steel barricades. Other events sponsored by LASC included a Justice for Janitors Rally on Friday, and the Latin America Solidarity Conference which featured speakers and workshops on topics related to military and economic intervention.
